5 Questions to Ask Your Potential Attorney

Before you head into your cost free consultation, it’s worth doing a bit of research and preparing a list of questions that are important to ask before signing an agreement.

What’s your experience with handling cases like mine?

It’s important to hire an attorney who is extremely well versed in handling matters similar to yours.  Don’t shy away from this issue with your new potential attorney.  If they aren’t previously familiar with how to handle the uniqueness of your case, you’ll potentially pay for their education via a hourly fee.   Simply ask your attorney for a similar case they’ve handled and what the outcome was.

What are the possible outcomes of my case?

Though no two cases are the same, it’s important to know what your options are.  Ask your new potential attorney to slow down and walk you through each option and why they recommend the option they’ve highlighted.  Without understanding all the options, you won’t appreciate the outcome and you’ll most likely be confused about the process moving forward.

What are your rates and how often will you bill me?

This is imperative to ask if you want to eliminate the need for clarification down the road.  Understanding exactly when your attorney is going to send a bill helps to ensure you are within budget.  With hourly fees, this can be a complicated process often resulting in a different bill each month.  With fixed fees, billing becomes an easy and clear process to understand.  In addition, fixed fees allow you to prepare for payment with the assurance the price of service will never change.

How often do you communicate with your clients?

The number one complaint against attorneys is that they are “hard to reach”.  It’s important that you express your expectations for communication frequency, preferred method, etc. during the consultation.  This is will avoid frustration down the road.  Ask if they have client testimonials that you can review and look for phrasing that indicates a standing history of client care and responsive attention.

What do you consider a successful outcome?

This question will help you understand what outcome your attorney is aiming for.  It’s essential that you two are on the same page and that success is equally defined between both parties.  If not, your expectations will likely not be met and you’ll feel frustrated.
